6th Grade Elective Choices

Parents and students will use the Parent Portal for 2017-18 Elective Choices for all middle school students this year including incoming 6th graders however we also require a paper elective choice form that allows students to provide additional choices since the portal restricts students to two elective choices only (one primary, one alternate).  Elective choices will be made on-line in the parent portal for each respective student(s).  Each student will be able to choose their first choice plus an alternative elective on the portal.  Your primary choice on the portal should be the same as your 1st choice on the paper form and your alternate on the portal should be the same as your 2nd choice on your paper copy.  The portal choices will override the paper choices if they are not the same so please choose carefully.

Note: All 6th grade students are automatically enrolled in the Fine and Practical Arts Wheel.  If this is your first choice, you will only need to add an alternate choice next to it on the Parent Portal.  If your first choice is one of our music electives, you may delete 'The Wheel' and reselect your first choice and an alternate choice for your 2nd choice.

The school curriculum guide with course descriptions can be found by clicking here: School Curriculum Guide.  Elective choices to be used for the Portal are as follows:

Incoming 6th Grade

All 6th grade elective choices are year-long commitments.  Students will not be able to change electives mid-year.

  • Choral 6 #8271 – a full year course, no prior music experience required.

  • Band 6 #8272 –  this is a full year course, no prior music experience required.

  • Orchestra 6 #8273 – a full year course, no prior music experience required.

  • Fine and Practical Arts Wheel  #8071 - This is a year-long elective with quarterly rotations.  Quarterly classes may include Study Skills, Intro to Home Arts, Intro to Music, Intro to Art, Intro to Foreign Language, Intro to Technology, Intro to Digital Photography, or Intro to Robotics.  Students may not choose specific classes - they will be randomly assigned to a fixed quarterly rotation.  Rotations will vary and be dependent on final staffing needs and availability.

Middle School Class Placement Criteria

This will be updated for the 2017-18 school year when we receive more information from the district.

CUSD is transitioning to a performance based program for accelerated placement in middle school English and Social Science classes.  The performance criteria for accelerated placement will be shared in mid-March.  Only students who meet the newly developed performance criteria will be placed into accelerated ELA and SS course placement (with the exception of current GATE identified 6th and 7th grade students who are grandfathered into the current system until they transition to high school).   Check this link for a Special Edition Newsletter from your Guidance department about gifted and high achiever students.

Math placement for incoming students will be determined by Math Placement Testing.  One retake opportunity will be allowed for all students but this will only be held during the summer at the district office.  For more information on placement criteria, please see the 2016-17 Math Placement Criteria for Students New to the CUSD in the Resources File on the left of this page.  For additional information about including study guide materials, please refer to the CUSD Math Department website here.

Entering Course Requests on Parent Portal

Middle School parents will enter their student’s course requests through their Parent Portal Accounts. The window for elective registration will open on March 14th and close on March 21st for 6th grade students.

Click here to find instructions on entering Elective Course Requests for Middle School on the Parent Portal:

Middle School Elective Choices or review the 6th Grade Power Point Presentation for step by step instructions or Parent Portal Illustration document attached in the Locker on this page.  Instructions are also illustrated on the district portal page here.

6th graders need to choose 1 elective and 1 alternate. Once you select your 1st choice there will be an option to 'select alternate' next to this choice.  This will be your '2nd choice'.

Please contact your Academic Advisor for any questions regarding courses and the date range in which you are allowed to add/change your course requests.
